WORLD DAYS CALENDAR

20 February is the day dedicated to the celebration of the World Day for Social Justice and it is special because it also falls on the anniversary of the establishment of Fondazione Milan.

International Women’s Day takes place on 8 March every year to commemorate both the social, economic and political achievements and the discrimination and violence to which women have been and are still subjected in all parts of the world.

The first ‘World Down Syndrome Day’ was held on 21 March 2006. On the occasion of World Down Syndrome Day, we want to reiterate our commitment to supporting the accessibility of sport for all through the Sport for All programme.

2 April is World Autism Awareness Day, established in 2007 by the UN General Assembly. Fondazione Milan is committed to creating this awareness through integrated sports practice with the Sport for All programme

The United Nations General Assembly has named 6 April International Day of Sport for Development and Peace. On this day, the United Nations recognizes the importance of sport for fostering social change, community development, and promoting peace and understanding.

21 May is World Day for Cultural Diversity for Dialogue and Development, an important day that commemorates the beauty of diversity and peaceful coexistence between different cultures. Sport is relationship, sport is dialogue and it is also development.

25 May is World Africa Day, a day to celebrate the independence won by African countries in the 1960s. On this day, we renew the Fondazione Milan’s commitment together with the realities that operate in the African continent and give so many young people the chance to play sport and believe in their dreams.

World Environment Day is a holiday proclaimed in 1972 by the United Nations General Assembly on the occasion of the establishment of the United Nations Environment Programme and has been celebrated every year on 5 June since 1974 with the slogan Only One Earth.

Nelson Mandela International Day is an international day celebrated on 18 July. This day was declared by the United Nations in November 2009 and is an occasion to recognise his contribution to the struggle for democracy and the promotion of a culture of peace around the world.

International Youth Day is celebrated on 12 August and was established by the National Assembly in 1999. It is commemorated annually to bring youth issues to the attention of the international community and to celebrate the potential of young people as partners in today’s global society.

The International Day of Charity is celebrated worldwide on 5 September. This date is linked to Mother Teresa of Calcutta, a symbol of human solidarity, who passed away on 5 September 1997. Among the Fondazione Milan programmes, Sport for Change is the one that most identifies charity, as a form of help in difficult situations, as its founding value.

The International Day of Peace was established on November 30, 1981, by the United Nations General Assembly, through Resolution 36/67, with the aim of dedicating a day entirely to the promotion of world peace and nonviolence.

World Food Day wants to commemorate the anniversary of the founding date of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), established in Quebec on October 16, 1945.

World Children’s Day was first established in 1954 as Universal Children’s Day and is celebrated on 20 November each year to promote international togetherness, awareness among children worldwide, and improving children’s welfare.

Established by the United Nations in 1992, this Day aims to raise awareness towards understanding of disability issues and commitment to ensuring the dignity, rights and well-being of persons with disabilities.

The date was chosen to honor the United Nations General Assembly’s adoption and proclamation, on 10 December 1948, of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.
