Sport for Change – San Paolo

Redemption and Personal Growth through Sports

THE PROJECT

Implemented in the favelas of the southern area of São Paulo, the project aims to use sports as an educational tool to steer young people away from dangers related to loneliness, the streets, and technology dependency. In the São Francisco Xavier neighborhood, inhabited by approximately 70,000 people, spaces are limited, and life revolves around hills traversed by intricate streets and alleys, bringing along complex social situations.

THE PURPOSE

The Parish of “São Francisco Xavier” boasts a 53-year history, originating among the favelas of the southern area of São Paulo. Thanks to the generous donation of land by PIME (Pontifical Institute for Foreign Missions), the parish has ample spaces, including a multipurpose field for sports activities such as futsal and volleyball.

The contribution from Fondazione Milan will aim to develop a project aimed at children and adolescents, using sports as a unifying element. The primary objective is to promote the development of young people’s social relationships and protect their growth from the dangers of the street. At the same time, the project aims to enhance their physical and teamwork skills, emphasizing the importance of collaboration.

The project will be implemented during the Brazilian school year, starting in February and concluding in early December. This timeframe will allow for prolonged and meaningful involvement, offering participants the opportunity to fully experience the benefits of the initiative throughout the year.

BENEFICIARIES

The project is dedicated to 60 boys and girls aged 6 to 10.
